Making Backpack Class by Noodlehead

Join us when we create the Making Backpack by Noodlehead! This project is loved for its clean, simple lines and is the perfect canvas for your favorite canvas, waxed canvas, or dry oilskin fabrics. Choose between the Regular size for everyday use or the Mini for a compact, stylish look.

This intermediate workshop covers the essential "building blocks" of professional bag making:

•       Structure: How to use interfacing and foam stabilizers to give your bag a high-end feel.

•       Hardware: Installing rectangle rings and sliders for adjustable webbing straps.

•       Zippers: Mastering both the main top closure and a secure interior zippered pocket.

•       Assembly: Constructing a sturdy gusset and finishing the bag with professional binding.

Skill Level: Intermediate

Students should be comfortable with their sewing machine and basic straight-line sewing.

Quick Supply Guide

(Detailed requirements are in your pattern)

•       Pattern: Making Backpack by Noodlehead.

•       Fabric: Canvas or Waxed Canvas for the exterior; Quilting Cotton for the lining.

•       Interfacing: Fusible Woven (SF101), Medium-Weight Fusible (809), and Foam Stabilizer.

•       Hardware: (2) 1 ½" Rectangle Rings and (2) 1 ½" Sliders.

•       Webbing: 1 ½" wide for shoulder straps; 1" wide for top handles.

•       Zippers: One top closure zipper (22" for Regular / 18" for Mini) and one interior pocket zipper (8" for Regular / 6" for Mini).

Essential Tools to Bring

•       Sewing machine in good working order.

•       Denim or Microtex needles (Size 90/14 or 100/16).

•       Rotary cutter, mat, and acrylic rulers (6 ½" x 12" and 12 ½" square recommended).

•       Marking tool (pencil or fabric marker).

Requirements based on 44”-wide fabric.

•       1 yd (1 m) Exterior* Fabric

•       1 yd (1 m) Lining* Fabric

•       2 yds (1.8 m) Fusible Woven Interfacing (Pellon SF101- 20”-wide)

•       1 yd (1 m) Medium Weight Fusible Interfacing (Pellon 809 - 42”-wide)^

•       ½ yd (0.4 m) Foam Stabilizer (ByAnnie’s or 1 yard (1 m) Pellon Flex-Foam) ^

•       (2) 1 ½” (3.8 cm) wide rectangle rings & (2) 1 ½” (3.8 cm) wide strap sliders

•       (1) 22” (55 cm) zipper* for top closure

•       (1) 8” (20 cm) zipper* for interior zip pocket

•       1 1/8 yds (1 m) of 1” (2.5 cm) wide cotton or poly webbing for top handles

*PLEASE NOTE: this pattern is written for fixed-length zippers (not zipper by the yard, if using zipper by the yard please add 1.5" to the length of each designated zipper)

Recommended Fabrics: canvas (7-9 oz. weight), waxed canvas (8-10 oz. weight), or dry oilskin for exterior fabric, quilting cotton for lining fabric

Additional supplies + tools: Polyester thread, water-soluble pen or tailor’s chalk, cutting mat, ruler, rotary cutter, size 90/14 or 100/16 Denim or Microtex needle, (Optional) 2 ¼” wide x 1 ½” tall (5.7 cm x 3.8 cm) piece of leather for patch, (Optional) 2 rivets - 8-9 mm head with 6-8 mm posts (& corresponding setting tool), (Optional) front pocket closure (see pg. 6 note) 14mm magnetic snap or size 24 metal snap, glue/ ¼”-wide fusible web tape)

Class Cancellation Policy

You must preregister and prepay for all classes to reserve your space.

If you are unable to come to the class a refund will be given if you cancel up to 30 days prior. Cancelations done 7-30 days prior will be issued a store credit.
